Walk right into a prime institution as of late and your eyes experiment extra than posters approximately prom and geometry proofs. You might see a Pride flag in a counselor’s workplace, a cultural heritage banner in a global language study room, a student with a small skinny blue line sticker on a water bottle, an alternative with a BLM button on a backpack. The American flag, required through many states to be displayed somewhere inside the development, will probably be fr

Around 8:05 a.m., the hallway outside a middle school cafeteria sounds like a soft orchestra of chairs sliding and zippers closing. The intercom crackles, students rise, some place hands on hearts, a few stand with arms at their sides, a handful keep their seats. The Pledge of Allegiance still happens in many American schools, but the scene no longer looks uniform. In one classroom, the pledge is daily and dutiful. In another, it is optional and quiet. In a third, it is gon

A few years ago, a high school principal I know faced a problem she never expected to put on the agenda: pickup trucks with beach-size American flags whipping across the student parking lot every morning. Some kids cheered. Others felt intimidated after a week of lunchroom arguments about immigration and protests during the anthem. The principal met with student leaders, asked drivers to scale down the flagpoles for safety and tone, then took heat from parents who accused h

A few years ago I sat in a crowded gym on a Friday night while a high school football team took the field. The announcer asked for a “moment,” and the place fell quiet. Some bowed their heads. Others stared at the flag. A few teenagers whispered and snickered, then went silent. When the whistle blew, you could feel the room exhale. Later I heard two parents arguing in the parking lot about whether that quiet pause was a prayer by another name, and whether anything like it b

A few summers ago, a small-town library I know took down its lobby flag to make space for a display on local art. The director figured it would be a one-week rearrangement, not a statement. Within a day, she had two angry voicemails accusing her of hating America and three emails praising her for being more inclusive. She put the flag back. The art display moved to a hallway. No one felt great about it. That tiny episode captures a larger pattern. All across the country,

A few summers back, a small-town principal quietly asked the custodian to take down the hallway flags before a regional tournament. Some teams were arriving from different states, and a few parents had emailed about wanting a “neutral environment.” The principal sighed, waved at the rows of flags that had watched generations of kids hustle to class, and said, “It’s only for the weekend.” Monday came, the flags stayed in storage for a week, then a month. By winter they were

Walk into ten public colleges and you'll see ten diverse relationships with the flag. In one, the Stars and Stripes hangs in the back of a whiteboard, a bit of faded, still anchoring the room. In every other, the American flag has been pulled all the way down to restoration a damaged mount and not at all returned, although scholar-made banners for golf equipment and cultural celebrations fill the wall. In a 3rd, simplest the professional country and country wide flags are a
